A list of software packages for modelling and simulation of dynamic systems. General purpose tools and domain specific ones are mixed in this list.

Commercial Tools

  • ACSL (MGA Software): Simulation of block diagram type systems.
  • ADAMS (MSC Software, Inc.): Simulation of 3-dimensional mechanical systems. Many professional users in the automotive industry.
  • AMESIM (Imagine): Simulation of fluid power systems and hydraulics.
  • ANYLOGIC (XJ Technologies): simulation tool for complex discrete, continuous and hybrid systems based on UML and Java.
  • APROS - APMS (VTT Automation; Finntech): Simulation of thermohydraulic systems, especially aimed at power plant simulation (APROS). Paper and pulp mill simulation (APMS).
  • AspenTech Process Simulation Software: (AspenTech) Aspentech offers a family of CAE tools for the process industry. Some of that tools are also capable of dynamic process simulation, e.g. SPEEDUP (many professional users in the process industry)
  • BATH FP (University of Bath): Simulation of fluid power systems.
  • BUILDSIM (Tritera): A general purpose simulation tool, block diagram style. Available for Macintosh and PC.
  • DSHPLUS (Fluidon):The program developed particularly for the dynamic calculation of complex fluid-technical systems
  • DYMOLA (Dynasim AB): object-oriented modeling of physical systems based on the Modelica language.
  • DYNAST (Czech Technical University): General purpose simulation tool, mainly used for mechatronics and hydraulics.
  • EASY5 (MSC Software): Simulations of block diagrams. Libraries in several domains available (hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, thermal, electrical, digital sub-systems).
  • FLOWMASTER2 (Flowmaster International): Simulation of fluid power systems.
  • gPROMS (Process Systems Enterprise Ltd.): Stationary and dynamic simulation as well as optimization of chemical processes. Based on similiar ideas as Modelica.
  • HYDRO ANALYST (Flotron): A hydraulic system simulation package.
  • HYPROTECH - family of tools
  • (HYSIS - Continuous Processing Industries, HTFS - thermal design and simulation of heat exchangers)
  • ITI-SIM (ITI): Mechatronics and Hydraulics Simulation Software.
  • MATHMODELICA (MathCore Engineering AB): object-oriented modeling, simulation, integration and visualization of physical systems based on the Modelica language.
  • MATRIXx and SystemBuild (National Instruments) MATRIXx is a framework for modeling and simulating complex dynamic systems as well as specifying and testing control/software algorithms.
  • SABER (Analogy): A simulator for electrical/electronic and multi-technology circuits and systems
  • SIMGAUSS (Additive): Simulation of non-linear differential equations and state-space systems.
  • SIMNON (Lund University; SSPA Maritime Consulting): A relativly old, nonlinear simulation program based on block diagrams that was originally developed by Hilding Elmqvist, Lund Institute of Technology.
  • SIMPACK (INTEC): Analysis and design of general mechanical systems. Many users in automotive and railway industry (special modules to handle wheel/track contact of trains)
  • SIMULINK (The MathWorks): A block-diagram style modelling and simulation tool integrated into the Matlab environment (most widely used block diagram simulator).
  • SINDA/FLUINT (Cullimore and Ring Technologies): A generalized fluid/thermal flow simulation tool.

Free, Mostly Academic Tools

  • The ASCEND Project (Carnegie Mellon University): Large-scale object-oriented mathematical modeling environment and strongly typed mathematical modeling language. It has primarily been developed and used by Chemical Engineers, but is designed to be domain independent.
  • BGSP (Sophia University,Japan)
  • Bond Graph Simulation Program
  • COVERS Visual discrete event modeling and simulation tool. Hierarchical structure diagrams and statecharts are mapped to C++ objects.
  • HOPSAN (Linköping University): power-port based tool which uses bi-lateral delay lines to solve the ordinary differential equations of a system
  • HyBrSim: A Hybrid Bond Graph Simulator. It is an experimental modeling and simulation environment to establish a formal framework and serves as a precursor to an object-oriented implementation as part of the Modelica modeling language.
  • OMOLA/OMSIM (Lund Institute of Technology): An object-oriented modelling and simulation tool. Many of the ideas from OMOLA have influenced the Modelica design.
  • OPEN SOURCE MODELICA (Linköping University): An object oriented environment for modeling and simulation based on Modelica language.
  • Smile (Technical University of Berlin and GMD FIRST): A prototypical object-oriented, equation-based, generic simulation environment.
