Call for Papers

Call for Papers, libraries, tutorials, vendor presentations and exhibitors for the 9th International Modelica Conference 2012 in Munich

Scope of the Conference

Modelica is a freely available, equation-based, object-oriented language for convenient and efficient modeling of complex, multi-domain cyber-physical systems described by ordinary differential, difference and algebraic equations. The companion Modelica Standard Library has been utilized in demanding industrial applications, including full vehicle dynamics, power systems, robotics, hardware-in-the-loop simulations and embedded control systems with nonlinear Modelica models.

The Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) is a freely available standard for the tool-independent exchange of models and for co-simulation. It is supported by many Modelica and non-Modelica tools and is the key to utilize Modelica models in non-Modelica environments.

The Modelica conference will bring together people using Modelica and/or FMI for modeling, simulation, and control applications, Modelica language designers, Modelica and/or FMI tool vendors and Modelica library developers. It provides Modelica users the opportunity to stay informed about the latest language, library, and tool developments, and to get in touch with people working on similar modeling problems. The conference is planned for about 300 - 350 participants and will cover topics such as the following:

  • Multi-engineering modeling and simulation with Modelica
  • Free and commercial Modelica libraries (mechanics, electrical, hydraulics, thermal, fluid, media, chemical, building, automotive, aircraft, ...)
  • Automotive applications
  • Thermodynamic and energy systems applications
  • Mechatronics and robotics applications
  • Other industrial applications, such as electric drives, power systems, aerospace, etc.
  • Real-time and hardware-in-the-loop simulation
  • Simulation and code generation for embedded control systems
  • Applications of Modelica for optimization and optimal control
  • Modelica modeling, simulation and design tools
  • Symbolic algorithms and numerical methods for model transformation and simulation
  • New features for future Modelica versions
  • Modelica in other application areas (mathematical programming, databases etc.)
  • Modelica for teaching and education
  • New features of future FMI versions
  • FMI in Modelica and non-Modelica applications and tools

In addition, the conference will include:

  • Modelica tutorials for different levels of modeling experience
  • Modelica Award for the 2 best free Modelica libraries (500 + 250 Euro)
  • Vendors’ presentations of commercial and free Modelica tools
  • Vendors' exhibition

Call for Papers

You are encouraged to submit a full paper of at least 4 pages with a maximum of 10 pages. The full paper in PDF format should be submitted to the Conference Management System. Please see Author's Guide for further information. The final paper has to be submitted together with a one-page abstract (which will be provided to the conference participants in printed format, whereas the full paper will be only provided in eletronic format on an USB stick).

Papers can be submitted via the EasyChair conference management system:

https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=modelica2012

There, you can also read your reviews and hand in the final paper after the reviewing process has taken place. In order to submit a paper, you need to have an EasyChair account. Simply follow the provided instructions to create an account. The same account can be used for several conferences over several years. Once you have logged in, you can upload your contribution in the section: "New submissions". Simply follow the instructions.

The paper submission form includes the option to mark suitable topics for your paper. Please use this feature since it helps us to find suitable reviewers for your paper. Furthermore, there is the option to attach a .zip file to your paper. In this way, you can provide example models that correspond to your paper.

Call for Libraries

You are encouraged to submit a free Modelica application library in Modelica source code form. The library should be sent to the program chairs (modelica2012@modelica.org) and provided under the Modelica License 2. Please submit also a corresponding paper to the conference. If the paper gets accepted, you can present your library at the conference and you can compete for the library award.

The best two application libraries will get an award of 500 and 250 Euro. With the exception of members from organizations that decide on the library award (DLR, Linköping University, Dassault Systèmes), everyone can apply for this award.

Libraries are evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • How useful is the library for the Modelica community, especially for industrial applications?
  • Basic design principle of the library (e.g. physical components are modeled in a declarative way and there are no un-physical restrictions how components can be connected together).
  • Comprehension of the library (small or large library, examples).
  • Usage of the library (component documentation, users guide, parameter menus, etc.)

Accepted libraries will be included on the conference stick and linked to the Modelica web site.

Call for Vendor Presentations

On Tuesday afternoon, 1.5 hours are devoted to vendor presentations. 8 slots of 45 minutes per slot are available. Vendors can demonstrate their tools online and provide latest information of features. Since only a limited number of vendor presentations can be held (up to 8), please contact us as soon as possible at modelica2012@modelica.org, providing title, presenter(s), and an abstract of the vendor presentation, if possible with images (this information will be provided in the conference program and on the conference web page). Please fill out also this application form. Decision about the acceptance of vendor presenetations will be based upon Modelica/FMI relation of content and on the time of application.

Call for Exhibitors

During the conference, developers and vendors have the chance to present their Modelica- and/or FMI-related products and services, like:

  • Modeling simulation and design tools
  • Modelica libraries
  • Consulting and engineering with Modelica and/or FMI.

The exhibition will take place in a 14m x 36m room (Tenne, ground floor), in which also the coffee breaks and the lunches are served. Since space is limited for about 15 exhibition places, please contact us as soon as possible at modelica2012@modelica.org stating also your needs for technical support.  Please use this application form, when you want to reserve a place for your exhibition.

The exhibition room has a height of 4.33m (at some parts lower). The exhibition takes place during the Conference from Sept. 4 to Sept. 5, 2012. You can order one or more places (pricing information). Do not hesitate to contact us and feel free to ask any question.

Decision about the acceptance of exhibitors will be based upon Modelica/FMI relation of products and/or services and on the time of application. The placement of exhibitors is organized as follows: first, the high-priced places can pick their spot, then the lower priced places. Among the same category, early applications get the right to choose first.

Call for Tutorials

At the Modelica conference, several tutorials will take place in parallel. Each tutorial will last for up to 3 hours and 45 minutes  and includes usually a "hands-on-experience" session with a Modelica simulation tool (participants are expected to have a notebook; the presenter will provide the Modelica and/or FMI simulation tool). Tutorials are free for the participants. Hand-outs of the presenter can be printed by the Modelica conference organizers. Since only a limited number of tutorials can be held in parallel (up to 8), please contact us as soon as possible at modelica2012@modelica.org, providing title, presenter(s), and an abstract of the tutorial (this information will be provided in the conference program and on the conference web page).

Decision about the acceptance of tutorials will be based upon Modelica/FMI relation of content and on the time of application. Please note that the tutorials on Monday are not intended to be product presentations. For this purpose, there exists the vendor session on Tuesday afternoon. The tutorial session serves a different purpose, especially to demonstrate and educate how to solve problems with Modelica and FMI. Of course this may involve the application of a certain tool but the modeling work or problem analysis shall be the focus point of the tutorial.
